Capoeira is an interactive game of martial arts, gymnastics, rhythm and strategy accompanied by live music.  It is a tradition that includes tricks, traps, escapes, and acrobatics in a ritual combat.  Capoeira comes from the colonial era when African slaves in Brazil disguised self-defense as dance and play.  Today capoeira is practiced around the world.  Água de Beber (ADB) is the Sacramento, California branch of the United Capoeira Association (UCA).  ADB is directed by Contramestre Galego (Patrick Hilligan) who founded the group in 2000.  Água de Beber's academy Move! has been a center for culture and community in Sacramento since 2001.

    Classes

Capoeira classes at Move!, and at other locations in the Sacramento region, offer the public a chance to participate in this unique art.  Classes include instruction in martial arts, dance, and acrobatics plus music, language, history, and more in a fun and positive environment.  Students progressively learn the steps, kicks, dodges, cartwheels, and traditions while having a great time and getting fit.  Capoeira classes are open to the public ages 3 through adult.  First-timers are welcome anytime, just call or email for a free orientation and trial class.

    Community Involvement

ADB is commited to being a positive force in the local and global community.  We believe in promoting capoeira's amazing capacity to transform individuals and build community.  In addition to maintaining a full-time cultural center, providing scolarships to local youths in the capoeira training program, donating performances and workshops to local causes, and supporting guest teachers, ADB makes regular donations to Projeto Kirimurê, a non-profit community center for disadvantaged children in Bahia, Brazil.
